Hue Central Hospital: A 130-Year Journey of Establishment and Development
Hue Central Hospital is one of the leading flagships of Vietnam's healthcare system. Spanning over a century closely intertwined with the nation's historical transformations, it stands not only as the cradle of modern medicine in Central Vietnam but also as one of the country's top specialized medical centers.
1. Establishment History: The First Western-style State Hospital in Vietnam Hue Central Hospital was established by a royal decree issued by Emperor Thanh Thai in 1894 (the 6th year of the Thanh Thai reign). It is recognized as the first Western-style state hospital built in Vietnam and Indochina.
Initially, it was named Hue Hospital (French: Hôpital de Hué), serving the medical needs of the royal family, court officials, and local residents of the capital.
In 1921, the hospital was expanded and renamed Khai Dinh Hospital, placed under the management of the French protectorate administration and the Nguyen Dynasty, becoming the main medical treatment center for the Annam (Central Vietnam) region.
2. Resistance Wars and Historical Transitions During the resistance wars against the French and American forces, Hue Central Hospital played a crucial role as a frontline medical facility in Central Vietnam—a region that bore the heavy brunt of war and casualties.
The hospital continuously carried out emergency care and medical treatment for thousands of wounded soldiers and civilians under severely scarce medical supplies and equipment.
Following the liberation of Southern Vietnam and national reunification (1975), the hospital officially adopted the name Hue Central Hospital, operating directly under the Ministry of Health, embarking on a period of recovery and reconstruction.
3. Development Breakthroughs and Modern Standing Entering the era of reform (Doi Moi) and integration, Hue Central Hospital underwent a powerful transformation, evolving from a regional medical facility into a Special Grade Hospital (in 2009)—one of the highest classifications in Vietnam's healthcare system.
Scale and Infrastructure: The hospital boasts an expansive campus equipped with modern specialized centers, including the International & High-Tech Medical Center, Oncology Center, Cardiovascular Center, and Organ Transplantation Center. With thousands of patient beds, the hospital meets the healthcare demands of the Central Region, the Central Highlands, and the entire nation.
Pioneering High-Tech Medicine: Hue Central Hospital is a shining beacon on Vietnam's medical map with pinnacle clinical techniques:
Organ Transplantation: It is one of Vietnam's premier organ transplant centers, having successfully performed numerous heart, liver, kidney, and bone marrow transplants, including highly complex cross-country heart transplants.
Cardiology & Oncology: It leads in complex interventional cardiology, open-heart surgery, and the application of cutting-edge radiotherapy technologies for cancer treatment.
4. Future Mission In addition to providing medical care, Hue Central Hospital serves as a prestigious training and practical facility for generations of doctors and pharmacists from the Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy, as well as a major center for scientific research and international cooperation.
With a legacy spanning over 130 years, Hue Central Hospital continues to strive toward becoming an international-standard Medical Hub, remaining a source of pride for medicine in the ancient capital and across the nation.
