Wartime Stretcher – A Humanitarian Mark Amid the Smoke of War

During the years of war, the stretcher was one of the most important medical tools on the battlefield. With its simple structure, often made from wood, bamboo, metal, canvas, or hammocks, it became an indispensable means of transporting wounded soldiers, patients, and injured civilians to places where they could receive emergency care.

Amid the harsh conditions of war, with limited medicine, medical equipment, and transportation, the stretcher served as a vital bridge between the front line and military medical stations. Along forest paths, through mud, bombs, bullets, and danger, military medical workers, civilian frontline volunteers, and fellow soldiers used stretchers to carry the wounded away from hazardous areas and help them access timely medical care.

Though simple in form, the stretcher carries profound humanitarian value. Each act of carrying a wounded person was a race against time, an effort to reclaim life for those in critical condition. The image of people carrying stretchers during wartime has also become a symbol of courage, comradeship, and the responsibility to save lives in the most difficult circumstances.

Today, the wartime stretcher is not only a medical artifact, but also a historical witness to the quiet sacrifices of military medical forces and those who served both at the rear and on the front lines. This artifact reminds us of the noble value of medicine: in any circumstance, the mission of protecting human life must always come first.
